In the course of its development, the FW-190 - which was initially intended as a medium altitude fighter - became the basis from which a whole family of aircraft designed for totally different purposes was created. It seemed that there was no battlefield use for which the FW-190 could not be exploited. However, when the Second World War started, the Luftwaffe had no aircraft that could fulfill the functions of a high-altitude fighter. In those years, Luftwaffe headquarters were in favor of a high-altitude bomber that was practically inaccessible for interceptors and denied the very idea of defensive tactics - impossible for anything but a high-altitude fighter.
However, the development of high-altitude fighters was being conducted in Germany long before the direct threat of enemy high-altitude bombers became apparent. One of the companies carrying out such projects was Fokke-Wulf.
The concept of creating a high-altitude fighter involved designing a new aircraft based on the serially produced FW-190A fighter. Several modifications of the serial aircraft were considered. The changes introduced mostly involved installing new engine types or modernizing pre-existent engines. The first version, marked FW-190B, was equipped with a radial BMW 801 engine and - in contrast to the A series - was equipped with a powerful supercharger and pressurized cockpit. It was followed by another modification - the FW-190C - initially equipped with a 1,750-power DB 603A in-line engine and later with a DB 603G engine. Tests showed up the unsatisfactory characteristics of the superchargers and it was decided to shift the main emphasis towards introducing a new, powerful Jumo 213 engine on the FW-190D series.
The new aircraft was based on the standard FW-190A-8 airframe. As opposed to the serial fighter, it had a 12-cylinder liquid cooled inline Jumo 213A engine rated at 1,740 HP. Installation of the new engine entailed fuselage elongation, which was made up for by a larger tail fin. Flight tests of the new plane produced excellent results and serial production was launched.
A small pre-serial set of FW-190D-0 planes was produced in 1943 which involved modernizing the serial FW-190A-7 airframes. It was followed by a small FW-190D-1series, the aircraft of which differed from the pre-serial version in their larger surface of empennage (vertical stabilizer). In general, the alteration of existing airframes was related to the installation of a new engine and fuselage insert placed right in front of the empennage. The latter made up for the front part of the fuselage which was elongated to accommodate the new engine.
The first mass-produced serial model of the “D” modification to begin production in August 1944 was the FW-190D-9, which was intended to replace the FW-190A-8. Aircraft of this series were equipped with Junkers Jumo 213A-1 engines with MW-50 water-methanol injection systems, increasing engine power to 2,240 HP. Fighter armament consisted of two 20mm MG 151/20 guns in the wing and two 13mm MG 131 machine-guns.
700 units of FW-190D planes of all modifications were produced.

Main modifications:

FW-190D-9/R11 - All-weather fighter. Equipped with PKS 12 laying system and improved radio equipment.
FW-190D-10 - Analogous to the D-9. Armament: 1 MK 108 motor-gun of 30mm caliber; 2 MG 151/20 guns of 20mm caliber.
FW-190D-11 - Fighter. Engine: Jumo 213F-1 with three-stage supercharger and MW-50 boost device. Armament: 2 MK 108 guns of 30mm caliber; 2 MG 151/20 guns of 20mm caliber.
FW-190D-11/R5 - Modified FW-190D-11. It was possible to install 8 bombs weighing 50kg each.
FW-190D-11/R11 -FW-190D-11 analogue. Modified radio equipment.
FW-190D-11/R21 -FW-190D-11 analogue. No MW-50 injection system.
FW-190D-11/R25 -FW-190D-11 analogue. Larger fuel reserve.
FW-190D-12 - Fighter. Armament: 1 MK 108 motor-gun of 30mm caliber; 2 MG 151/20 guns of 20 mm caliber. Additional engine armor.
FW-190D-12/R5, /R11, /R20, /R21 and R25 -FW-190D-12 analogue. Modernized as FW-190D-13 - FW-190D-12 analogue, but with MG 151/20 gun instead of MK 108.
FW-190D-14 - Fighter. Engine: DB 603A.
FW-190D-15 - Fighter. Engine: DB 603EB.

Advantages: One of the best front-line fighters. Good flight characteristics. Simple and easy to control and maintain. Strong firing capacity. Multifunctional. Good field of vision from the cockpit. Reliable. Good armor for the crew and power plant.

Disadvantages: Low maneuverability.
